Jimbaran: the Seafood Bay at the Foot of the Bukit

Grilled fish on the sand at sunset, a calm swimming bay, a giant Garuda on the hill — the gentle, family-shaped corner where the airport, Seminyak and the Uluwatu cliffs all meet.

The Editors

Jimbaran is the bay everyone passes and too few stay in. It sits just south of the airport, on the calm eastern shoulder of the Bukit peninsula, where a long crescent of pale sand faces a sheltered, swimmable bay — the gentle counterpoint to the dramatic Uluwatu cliffs a fifteen-minute drive south.

Its fame is built on dinner. As the sun drops, twenty side-by-side grill kitchens light their coconut-husk fires along the sand and the whole bay fills with the smell of charring seafood; you choose your fish from the ice, they grill it with sambal and lime, and you eat it barefoot at a table on the beach with your feet almost in the water. It is the most reliably romantic two hours in south Bali, and it costs a fraction of a Seminyak dinner.

The day has its own quiet pleasures. The dawn fish market — where the night boats land their catch — is a working spectacle worth the early alarm; the swimming is genuinely good, calm and shallow where the south coast is wild; and the smart end of the bay, anchored by the Four Seasons' Sundara beach club, does the polished pool-deck version for those who want it.

Behind the beach, the older island asserts itself. The Garuda Wisnu Kencana cultural park, crowned by the 121-metre statue of Vishnu astride the mythical Garuda — Bali's tallest monument — looms over the peninsula; and the twelfth-century Pura Ulun Siwi, the rice-and-irrigation temple in the village, still runs to the agricultural calendar it was built for.

What makes Jimbaran quietly clever is its position. You are ten minutes from the airport, twenty from Seminyak's dining, fifteen from the Uluwatu clubs and the sea temple — and yet you sleep on a calm bay with none of the noise of any of them. For a family, a first trip, or a split-stay base, it is the most forgiving address in the south.

You come to Jimbaran for the fish on the sand, and stay for the bay that lets the children swim.

Tell the concierge your dates and party size; Jimbaran is the south's most forgiving base, and we will hold the right house on the bay.

Jimbaran for a calm swimming bay, easy dining and a central base; Uluwatu, 15 minutes south, for dramatic clifftop scenery, surf and sunset clubs. Many guests base in one and day-trip to the other.
